I love every Clare Lydon book that I have read so far. Even though I don't relate to the main characters' primary identifiers (being royalty or a professional athlete), their struggles with hiding their public identities while becoming closer in private is definitely something a reader can relate to. This was a fun, spicy, humorous read with some emotional turmoil. I'd read it again (or listen to the audiobook)!
I have to admit I was a little hesitant about this one, only because as a Brit you have to 100% suspend belief to accept a Royal family that feels so familiar but is totally different.
Once I managed to push that aside I really got into the novel and enjoyed the push and pull between Ash and Victoria throughout their relationship. Knowing full well what the state of affairs is in the UK at the moment, you could understand Victoria’s hesitancy to be openly out but also her defiance to stand up for what she believes is right. I could also feel the frustration Ash felt for being hidden away. Hats off to grandma for laying it all out (who I totally pictured as Queen Elizabeth II 💔
I loved the feeling the football scenes left me with, some real Lionesses vibes especially with their (now 2!) Euros wins!
Now I just want a book on Astrid and Sofia!
Haiku review in the picture!
I haven’t read all of Clare’s books yet but this is my favorite so far. I just couldn’t put it down. Hopefully there will be a sequel because who doesn’t want to know what happens next for this hot couple.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love the way the Ash and Victoria played off against each other. It made me wonder how a modern monarchy would work around one of their own being gay. A great read!
I’ll be honest — I thought this book would just be a “nice little read,” something light to dip into. And yes, it was an easy read… but it completely blew me away. In the best possible way.
Football plays such a huge role in so many of 'our lives', and to see it wrapped into a love story like this — with heart, humour, a bit of sexy and just the right amount of fantasy — was genuinely brilliant. We need more books like this.
In fact, I’m dangerously close to starting a petition (or, let’s be real, a slightly chaotic campaign) to demand a sequel. I was already a fan of Clare’s books — because let’s face it, there’s not nearly enough series and films out there for the lesbians — but this one’s made me a proper fangirl.
Clare, please start writing faster. I’m running out of books
